Exeter Dyslexia
Assessing and Diagnosing Dyslexia in the heart of Devon

Meet the Assessor
My name is Phoebe Park. I am a fully qualified dyslexia assessor and specialist teacher with over ten years experience working in primary, secondary, mainstream and specialist schools both in the UK and overseas.

I am an Associate Member of the British Dyslexia Association AMBDA and hold an Assessment Practising Certificate APC. I also have a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.

I am passionate about using assessment tools to show children their strengths, as well as helping them to understand their challenges. I have an excellent understanding of the barriers experienced by children with literacy difficulties and I am skilled at making tailored recommendations to overcome them. Although my qualifications are in the field of dyslexia, I have a wealth of knowledge of other special educational needs and always use a holistic approach to diagnostic assessment. I currently only assess children and young people aged from 8 years to 16 years old.

I carryout assessments at my home in Exeter. It is located within easy reach of the M5 motorway and Exeter train stations.

Dyslexia Assessment Explained
Dyslexia Assessment Explained
What is a full diagnostic dyslexia assessment?
-
A comprehensive assessment using specialist tests which provide a definitive diagnosis.

-
This type of assessment can only be carried out by highly qualified specialist assessors who hold accreditation with awarding bodies such as the British Dyslexia Association.

-
A full diagnostic assessment is not the same as a dyslexia screener which your child may have had at school. Diagnostic assessments are far more detailed and will test a wide spectrum of your child's abilities.
When is an assessment needed?
A dyslexia assessment is suitable if your child is experiencing noticeable difficulties with any of the following-

-
Reading
-
Spelling
-
Organising and producing coherent writing
-
Mispronouncing and not being able to recall words when talking
-
A noticeable difference in their verbal and written ability
-
Difficulties with memory and personal organisation
-
Lack of educational progress
What are the benefits of assessment?
-
A clear diagnosis stating if your child does or does not have dyslexia.

-
Identification of you child’s difficulties and strengths, together with the cognitive reasons behind them.

-
A clear understanding of your child’s learning needs and how they can be supported both at home and school.

-
Identification if your child requires specialist teaching and guidance on how to access it.

-
A comprehensive report that can be used at any point to evidence your child’s needs at school, college, university or the workplace. It does not expire as the child ages.

-
Many children and parents find the assessment helps their emotional wellbeing and self-esteem.
What does assessment included?
Analysis of your child’s developmental history

Through information provided by parents and teachers a detailed analysis of your child's developmental and educational history will be completed prior to the assessment.
In Person Assessment
Your child’s cognitive and literacy abilities will be measured using highly specialised, standardised tests alongside assessor observations.
This takes 3 to 4 hours.
Children find this a fun and insightful experience.
Written Report
A comprehensive written report which includes-
-
A clear diagnosis
-
A profile of your child’s strengths and needs.
-
Individulised recommendations to support your child at home and school.
-
The report remains valid as your child moves through educational phases and into adulthood.
-
It can be used to apply for Disabled Student Allowance at any point in the future.
